Bay Area Park Permits for Bounce Houses

Every Bay Area city treats bounce houses in parks differently. Some allow them at set picnic sites, some charge an extra fee, and some ban them outright. Here is what each city’s own rules say.

How park permits usually work

  • Reserve a picnic site first. Bounce houses are almost always tied to a paid picnic reservation.
  • Check the site allows a jump house. Many cities allow them only at certain sites, and often only one per picnic.
  • Watch for size and power limits. Some parks set a maximum footprint, and some restrict generators or charge for power.
  • Expect vendor paperwork. Several cities ask the rental company for a business license or a certificate of insurance naming the city, sometimes two or three weeks ahead.

When a park says no

If your park does not allow inflatables, or the paperwork deadline has passed, soft play and ball pits are the easy alternative. They need no power, set up on grass or a patio, and are rarely restricted the way jump houses are.

What to send us

When you book a park party, tell us the park, the picnic area, your reservation time, and any vendor forms the city has given you. The crew can only set up inside your reserved time, so allow for setup before guests arrive.

Questions parents ask

Do I need a permit for a bounce house in a Bay Area park?

Usually, yes. Most cities tie bounce houses to a picnic reservation and allow them only at certain sites. Some, like Walnut Creek, do not allow them in city parks at all.

How much does a jump house permit cost in San Francisco?

The first jump house is covered by the picnic reservation, with Rec & Park’s approval. Each additional jump house is $100 plus a $250 security deposit, per the FY25-26 fee sheet.

Which Berkeley parks allow bounce houses?

Set sites at Aquatic Park, Cedar Rose, Codornices, Cragmont, Grove, James Kenney, King School, San Pablo, Shorebird and Strawberry Creek, each with an 18 by 18 or 12 by 12 foot limit.

Can I use soft play in a park instead?

Yes. Soft play and ball pits need no power and are a good fit for parks that restrict inflatables.
